Historical Context of Surah Nuh

Surah Nuh was revealed during a period when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the early Muslims were facing strong opposition from the disbelievers of Makkah. Much like the Prophet Noah’s mission, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was calling his people to monotheism, warning them of the consequences of their stubbornness and idol worship. However, just as the people of Noah rejected the divine message, the Makkan disbelievers were also defiant.

By relating the story of Prophet Noah, the Quran provides a powerful parallel to the challenges faced by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Surah Nuh serves as a reminder that every prophet faced opposition, but the ultimate victory belongs to those who remain steadfast in their faith.

The Story of Prophet Noah in Surah Nuh

Surah Nuh primarily revolves around Prophet Noah’s mission, his plea to his people, and their persistent rejection of his message. The Surah starts with Allah declaring that Noah was sent to his people to warn them of a severe punishment if they did not repent from their sins and return to the worship of one God.

“Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying], ‘Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment.'” (Quran 71:1)

Prophet Noah’s story is one of perseverance. He preached to his people for 950 years (as mentioned in Surah Al-Ankabut 29:14), calling them to the path of righteousness, yet they arrogantly dismissed his warnings. The people of Noah mocked him, insulted him, and persisted in their sinful ways. Despite their continuous rejection, Noah remained steadfast, employing various methods to appeal to their hearts and minds.

In Surah Nuh  Noah is shown pleading with his people in various ways:

  1. Calling them to seek forgiveness: Noah urged his people to seek Allah’s forgiveness, assuring them that doing so would result in both spiritual and material benefits. He warned them that their disobedience would lead to a painful end.“And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver; He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers, and give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.’” (Quran 71:10-12)
  2. Reminding them of Allah’s signs: Noah reminded his people of Allah’s creation—the heavens, the earth, and the blessings around them. He implored them to reflect on the universe’s beauty and design as proof of Allah’s existence and power.“Do you not consider how Allah has created seven heavens in layers, and made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp?”(Quran 71:15-16)
  3. Pleading to their reason and emotions: Prophet Noah attempted to appeal to his people’s reason by showing the signs of creation and warning them of the consequences of their stubbornness. He hoped that through his warnings and reminders, they would return to Allah.

However, despite all of Prophet Noah’s efforts, his people continued to reject him. They turned away, became more defiant, and even plotted against Noah. Frustrated with their defiance, Prophet Noah finally prayed to Allah, seeking divine intervention. His famous prayer is recorded in the Surah:

“Noah said, ‘My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children will not increase him except in loss.'”
(Quran 71:21)

Ultimately, Allah answered Noah’s prayer by commanding him to build an ark. The people mocked Noah as he constructed the ark, not realizing the impending doom that awaited them. When Allah sent the great flood as a punishment, only those who followed Noah and boarded the ark were saved. The rest were destroyed, as their arrogance and rejection led to their downfall.
